2. What’s your major? What year will you graduate?
My major is Art Education and I will graduate in the spring of 2016.
3. Why did you choose a photography class (or photography as a major), and what do you hope to learn from school in general and this class specifically?
I chose this class because I have never taken anything like this class before and among the major courses I needed to choose from this was one that seemed most interesting. I hope to learn from this class a new perspective on how to see the world. Many of the art classes I've taken have been variations of drawing this seemed like an interesting direction to go.
4. What are your goals after graduation? Please list your goals in reverse order, starting five years out, then three, two, one, and six months.
My goals five years from now is to have been teaching for that long and to have begun my graduate studies working toward a professorship at the university level. Prior to that after a few years of teaching my wife would like to start her college studies and want to have purchased a house. Next year I will be finishing my degree and working on my student teaching and finding a position in secondary education. Then six months from now I'll be taking a ceramics course moving on in my major studies.
5. What artists, musicians, photographers, writers, movies, books have influenced you/your work?
It may sound funny but the largest influence on my work has been my great grandmother, Jackie Sherwin. She never achieved fame through her paintings but her dedication to her art has inspired many people over the last century. I'll include some of her work here in my blog.
6. Where do you get information about current national and international events?
I have an app on my phone called flipboard. It give a snap shot of many different news sources from BBC to the New York Times.
7. Are there any important websites that you are referencing for art/photo competitions and/or information?
I am a member of the Dunn Gallery in Dallas and frequently attend showings of various artists there.
8. What museums and/or galleries have you been to in the past year?
I also visit the DMA often.
9. Have you had any photo projects and/ or training in the past?
I have not had any photo training of any kind.
10. What is the value of art for the artist?
As an artist the value of art to me is seeing the world through the artist's eyes. Each person is different from the next. Some may be similar in some way or another, but there is always a difference however subtle or dramatic it may be. That diverse outlook is where the value comes.
11. What is the value of art for the audience?
The general audience wants value in how the art invokes an emotional reaction. The value is gained from the level that emotion rises or drops to.
12. Is photography a vocation or an avocation?
I have not determined that and reserve my response to this question until I actually have learned more about photography.
13. What is your passion?
This is a loaded question for me. My passion stems from my wife and kids. I am passionate about being a man of integrity and respect, reflecting a positive light on them in how I live my life. My passion also is in my work and expanding my medium into other areas of art.
14.What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?
Once in a while I'm afraid of my wife. Does that count? Really I'm afraid of letting down the ones I love. I'm afraid of seeing disappointment in their eyes. I am uncomfortable around fake people.
15. Do you have a passport?
No, I've never needed one.
16. Why did you sign up for this class? What do you hope to learn from it?
As I stated before I want to learn as much as I can about photography.
